U.S. Supreme Court Continues Protection of Religious Liberty in K-12 Education

In a landmark religious liberty case decided this morning, the U.S. Supreme Court continued its recent line of cases prohibiting states from discriminating against parents of faith seeking to use public voucher or tax credit scholarship funds to educate their children in accordance with their religious values.

In the 6 to 3 decision in Carson v. Makin, the Court decided that, in providing parents with public funds to educate their children in the public or private secondary schools of their choice when no public high school exists in their township, the state of Maine could not discriminate against parents who choose to use their public grants to educate their children at religious schools.

In the case, Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program, Inc. filed an amicus curiae brief making the argument adopted by the Court. See here for a brief article from National Review explaining the case.
