Georgians Maximize Support for Popular K-12 Scholarship Tax Credit Scholarship Program
$100 Million Annual Cap Met in 2021 and $78 Million Already Submitted for 2022

Recent announcements by the Georgia Department of Revenue (DOR) evidence continued strong taxpayer support for Georgia’s Education Expense Credit Program.

First, the DOR announced that taxpayers consumed all $100 million of the credits available in 2021.

“This robust support for one of the nation’s leading K-12 scholarship programs reflects state and national sentiment that now, more than ever, families need and deserve greater opportunities for access to learning,” said Lisa Kelly, President of the Georgia GOAL Scholarship Program (GOAL), which is the largest student scholarship organization (SSO) in the Peach State.

Additionally, the DOR announced that, as of noon on Thursday, January 6th, taxpayers had submitted applications for $78 million of the education tax credits for 2022. This is a statewide increase of 16% over the same time in 2021.

GOAL is responsible for 49% of the approved tax credits thus far for 2022, submitting $38 million in tax credit applications to the DOR on Opening Day.

Based upon ongoing application activity, GOAL believes that the 2022 tax credits will be exhausted sooner than they have been in recent years. Ongoing updates of the cap status will be posted to the GOAL website home page at www.goalscholarship.org, reflecting current information released by DOR.

As the 2022 General Assembly convenes today, GOAL is hopeful that the cap being met for 2021 will encourage legislators to increase the amount of tax credits available to this program in the future. Because of recent favorable changes in Georgia and federal tax law, businesses have shown heightened interest in the Program.

“Georgia has a highly successful tax credit scholarship program, proven to be working to increase parent satisfaction, high school graduation and college attendance rates, and diversity in private schools throughout Georgia. Since inception, the program has dramatically improved state and local budgets through its positive fiscal and economic impact. It’s time for Georgia’s elected officials to join numerous other states by doubling our cap and eliminating the sunset on our cap increase,” Kelly said.
